About Us

History contains two major Diasporas. The first refers to the widespread dispersal of Jewish peoples throughout antiquity. The second is modern and African, pertaining to the scattering and mingling of African peoples once they were sold into slavery.

Diaspora Marketplace is a storefront of African art from scattered nations. It began when Richard Shinhoster and his late brother, Earl T. Shinhoster, visited the continent following a lifelong interest in African history.

The two started establishing relationships with local artists and found themselves carrying a growing list of souvenir requests from friends and family. They noted that, while these countries had experienced recent political reforms, economic sufficiency was still severely needed. They saw an opportunity to enrich their artist friends while satisfying an apparent market in the Southeast for quality, moderately priced African art products. After initial success importing and selling art at festivals, they established a permanent storefront.

Although Richard Shinhoster has found economic success through the marketplace, he says that his greatest achievement has been fostering a cultural dialogue between Georgia and the African continent. In addition, his business has been instrumental in fostering the redevelopment of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Savannah, GA.

Diaspora Marketplace is an inherent part of Savannah’s tourist industry through its welcoming reception of art seekers from all over the country and abroad. Its affinity for hospitality inspired the creation of an event planning division within the organization. Mr. Shinhoster and his staff will excite you with a myriad of possibilities for creating the perfect event in Savannah. If you are interested, please contact us today!

The West African Tour has been a favorite of groups and individuals as they experience the rich tradition, culture, and beauty of Ghana, Togo, and Benin. The Shinhoster Group International sponsors a thirteen day West Africa Heritage Tour which includes airfare, ground transportation, hotel fees, attraction fees, and some meals. The next tour is scheduled for June 25th – July 8th , 2019. For more information, contact us today at 912-232-2626 or shingroupi@aol.com.
